Contains information from OpenNutrition and Open Food Facts, which is made available here under the Open Database License (ODbL).
Como's nutrition figures are not our own measurements. They come from open food databases maintained by other people, and this page records who they are, the licence their work is offered under, and what we do to it before you see it.
Sources
- OpenNutrition — everyday foods, prepared dishes, and restaurant items. This is the source behind most of what Como recognises when you describe a meal in words.
- Open Food Facts — barcoded packaged products, reached through OpenNutrition's grocery data. This is what answers a scanned barcode or a named brand.
Both are collaborative projects built by volunteers. If you find a food that is wrong in Como, it is usually wrong upstream too, and correcting it there fixes it for everyone rather than just for us.
Licence
Both databases are made available under the Open Database License v1.0. Como's food database is a derivative of them, and the nutrition information shown in the app is a Produced Work under that licence.
Portions of the underlying nutrient data originate with the USDA FoodData Central, which is in the public domain in the United States. No endorsement by the USDA is implied, and we credit it here as a courtesy rather than as an obligation.
How our food database is built
The ODbL asks anyone who publicly uses a derivative database to offer either the database itself or the method by which it was made. We offer the method, in full, as runnable source code:
- swisstropic/opennutrition-food-etl — the scripts that turn the published OpenNutrition dataset into the food database Como searches, together with a description of every artifact they produce.
It is not a summary. Given the upstream dataset and your own credentials for the embedding step, those scripts reproduce our derived database from scratch. The repository states which commit it was generated from, and it carries no data of its own — only the method.
